Any suggestions for a good wine or champagne?

Posted in Wine  on November 21st, 2008 by: admin

I just moved in with my boyfriend and I want to have a celebration dinner. He doesn't like to eat out, so I'm planning on ordering in from a cute little bistro down the street, and I'm looking for a good wine or champagne to go with it. We both like light, fruity wines. Something that goes down smooth, and isn't too dry. I prefer whites, but he likes both. Suggestions?

As far as price goes, I'm looking for a mid-range wine or champagne, between $25-$50 dollars.

As for wines, I would suggest Sauvignon Blanc. Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorite wines to introduce to a non-drinker, because it is indeed fruity and less alcohol. It is relatively inexpensive, does not have the flavor that most people don't like (tannin/bitter, acidic, oaky, etc), and it is readily available at supermarket and wine stores. I would suggest to start out with something cheaper, like Chateau St. Michelle Sauvignon Blanc ($14), Napa Cellar ($15), Chateau Souverin ($14), Dry Creek Fume Blanc ($14). Personal favorite include Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc ($16) and Caymus Conundrum ($25) and Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc ($20).

As for Champagne, I agree with the writer on looking for nice cheaper champagnes from California. I think Chandon makes very good and cheap champagnes. They have so many different types, mostly runs $15-30. Personal favorites from California include Frank's Family Champagne (especially the pink champagne $40) and Schramberg ($30-40). If you want something fruity and sweeter and not as dry, I would also throw this other one in - from France, Moet and Chandon has a wonderful sweeter champagne called Nectar Imperial ($40), hard to get but lovely.

Good luck and have fun.

How do I calculate the number of wine vs beer drinkers?

Posted in Wine  on November 19th, 2008 by: admin

I am planning a dinner and dance for about 40 adults. I am estimating that 8 or so will not drink. How do I know how much wine and beer to buy? Even though it is an Italian dinner, I just don’t know how big of a wine drinking crowd it will be.

Estimate that more will not drink like 12 or so. The number of non-drinkers is higher than 8. Get some decent box wine and put on ice and save the remainder for later.

How long is wine in a box good for after it is opened?

Posted in Wine  on November 19th, 2008 by: admin

I have a box of wine in my fridge, been there opened for probably 4 months. Is it still good?

Yea probably, I’ve had box wine that long before. Poor some in the glass. If it still smells ok it’s probably ok but if it smells sour then it has probably gone bad. You should be fine.

What kind of white wine goes best with fish?

Posted in Wine  on November 18th, 2008 by: admin

I will give you the extent of my wine knowledge: white wine goes with white meats, red wine goes with red meats.
So I’m going to a friend’s house for dinner tonight and she’s having fish. I want to bring a bottle of wine, what should I get?
I don’t want to spend a whole lot for one bottle of wine, so something that’s not too expensive, but still good. Thanks!

While generally white with fish red with meat still is ok it really depends on how the fish is cooked….heavier sauces require heavier wines .These days some wine makers are making heavier white wines then red so the best thing to do would be find out how the fish is being prepared and then go to your nearest store and they should be able to match it

if in doubt you could just pick up a nice bottle of white and it will be fine Chardonnay or chenin blanc would be fine

While we have oceans
Rivers that still bring us life
Reasons to live in the moment
Hold onto your time

Let your heart go where the wind takes it
Pure like the raindrops of time
Follow the path where it takes you
Straight down the line

Ladies and Gentlemen
Surely we’re here in mind
Watching our spirits dance on the
On the backs of our lives

How can one sit back and dream it
I’d have no peace in my life
Climbing these walls in an hourglass
Prized in our strife

And I have seen worlds filled with wonder
Lost on my own lonely mile
Lessons I wish I had mirrored
Time after time

Ladies and Gentlemen
Surely we’re here in mind
Watching our spirits dance on the
On the backs of our lives

While we have oceans
Rivers that still bring us life
Reasons to dance in the moment
Hold onto your time

Come fill up your souls with our blessings
Hold up your hands to the sky
Let the whole world know you’re out there
High in our highs

Ladies and Gentlemen
Surely we’re here in mind
Watching our spirits dance on the
On the backs of our lives
